Kickin It With Kenny

This past Monday, March 8, Kenny Crumpton joined Lakewood High School physics students for the second chance at making it across the pool.

Eighteen teams were included in this special regatta and were also featured on Fox 8 News from 6:00-9:00 am.

Students arrived at 6 am to get ready for their big debuts. Around 7:45, some boats entered the water. There were four heats in the regatta, one featuring both Mr. Hille’s kids, Elizabeth and Andrew and Ms. Frend’s son, Michael. Tavens, the cardboard company that has sponsored the LHS boat regatta also built a complicated, extravagant boat and two of their workers floated all the way across.

Surprisingly, many boats made it across the 25 m. pool and the entire third heat of boats also made it across. This second chance at rowing to the other side was greatly appreciated by many students as their first boats may have failed miserably. Physics teachers agreed that, for the 18 Kickin It With Kenny teams, if one of the two boats made it across, the group would receive full credit.

To find videos of the four heats and some interviews with Kenny himself, visit http://fox8.com/2015/03/09/and-theyre-off-kenny-visits-lakewood-hs-cardboard-boat-regatta/. You can also find DVDs of the entire show along with other Tuesday afternoon regatta videos being sold by Mr. Hille in room A312. These DVDs are $5.

Overall, it was a pretty impressive event as students were only allowed two materials… Cardboard and clear packing tape. There were also many restrictions that had to be followed in order to create a “legal” boat.

Way to go Physics students!
