Hearts are heavy in the district as we learned of the passing of a very important benefactor to Lakewood City Schools, George P. Read. Our thoughts are with the Read family at this difficult time. Throughout the years since he graduated Lakewood High School, he has generously donated money for new instruments and music equipment for students in the Lakewood High music program. Mr. Read and his family’s love for this city’s music program have helped make possible the amazing program that we have today.
Current students and staff involved in Choir Band and Orchestra got the chance to write thank you notes to him and his family for their hospitality before winter break. For those who do not recognize his name, he was mostly responsible for 5th grade field trips to see the Cleveland Orchestra, and providing new percussion equipment (among many other things). Those who knew Mr. Read are deeply saddened by the news, and the community as well. We can never fully express how grateful we are for the impact Mr. Read has had on Lakewood children and adults alike. Last May, the city honored Mr. Read by naming the Lakewood High Music Department after him. It warms our hearts to know that this amazing man’s spirit will live on through our Music Department for many generations to come.
