On January 18, 30 members of some Lakewood Churches were sleeping out in the crisp evening air in hopes of raising awareness for homeless people.
In attempts to grasp the feeling of helplessness, they made little cardboard “houses” that will sustain they’re livelihood, and symbolize the struggles that people without homes face on a daily basis.
They were making noise, and had several cars stop and made their donations. Every one of them were dedicated, and lasted the entire night. An estimated amount of $5,500.00 was made.
This act of awareness for the homeless can really open the eyes of people, considering the fact that people without homes sleep out on the streets in the blistering cold every day and night. If you thought going to school on a cold day was bad, just imagine waking up and sleeping in it. That’s the reality of some people. If you were to put yourself in their shoes, It brings a level of understanding that not many people would understand unless they were to go through the same thing.
The Lakewood Congregational Church and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church gave their assistance toward the “Sleep Out” awareness by having chaperons monitor and participate in the event.
Most people believe that they can surpass that amount made ($5,500.00) next year.
