In todays industrial society the risk of disaster caused by human mistake and greed is all to likely. Sadly in Lac La Biche, Alberta Canada otherwise known as Fort McMurray this risk became a reality earlier this week when the oil refinery, supplied by the natural reasources of the areas, went up in flames.

Its flame stretched through the surrounding woods near by the oil refinery and then to the residential area of the town where it destroyed homes and left people fleeing with little to no warning. This oil town was not booming until only a decade ago when when Canadians with ranging degrees saw the opportunity and money brought by this plant. Sadly with the fire this town could have taken its last breath or at least created a long road to recovery. With a population of 88,000 people, many being displaced from their houses and having them burned to the ground belongings and all, might not have a future here.

With the town being populated mainly by  oil company workers it could be a gosht town soon if the plant does not open up again. With people’s jobs comes people’s savings and life. Imagine having to restart after fleeing your home with flames growing behind you because of a malfunction in a place that once supplied the money you needed to support yourself and your family. What do you do? How do you move on? We like to think that disasters like this will not happen to us but the world and our homes our filled with dangers and risks.

We as a society make the choice everyday to support such oil refineries or nuclear power plants and because of that we need to take the blame and help the ones it effects.
