If you have seen LHS seniors walking around in a variety of red and green this week, don’t worry, they haven’t been consumed by a Christmas pandemonium. They’re dressed up as elves for Toys for Tots, a United States Marine Corps Reserve program. Founded in 1947, Toys for Tots collects toys and money and distributes gifts to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them Christmas gifts. Their stated goal is to “deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.”
Lakewood High School has been a part of the Toys for Tots program for over 25 years, collecting money with the help of its senior class. The contributions from our school have been a major part of Lakewood’s Toys for Tots program, no doubt providing thousands of young children with magical Christmases over the years.
Why should you donate to one of the elves this week? It’s unbelievably cliche, but think about the children. By donating your pocket change or spare dollars to Toys for Tots, you’ll be helping to give a gift to a young boy or girl who would otherwise be getting nothing this holiday season. Tap into your Christmas spirit this week and donate!
