On Wednesday, March 6th, the 11th annual Lakewood High School Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta took place in the LH Natatorium.
Teams of four competed against each other in a race across the school’s pool. Some teams participated in the morning race that was aired on Fox 8 News with “Kicking it with Kenny.” All teams including AP Physics, AP Chemistry, and other clubs and organizations participated in the Cardboard Boat Regatta that took place after school. The four teams with the fastest race time excluding clubs and organizations were placed in the finals to face each other after all the boats had sailed .
First place, went to the team with seniors Ashley Walker, Amber Wilson-Galvin, Selena Diaz, and Hedaia Shahin with their theme of “Cast Away.”
When asked about their victory, Walker said, ” I was in disbelief honestly. I was completely in shock until about five minutes after the fact and then I was just proud.”
Second place went to the “spies”, juniors Kendall King, Yasmeen Shafik, Christina Nelson, and senior Simone Brown.
The group that followed after the second place team went to the “sports team,” Seniors Matt Bosworth, Nick Hudson, Chris Brinich, Abbud El-Ashram.
Last but not least, Rebecca Palmer, Grace Dwyer, Lorna Barimi, and Pat Brennan with their theme of “Powderpuff Girls” won fourth place.
The first place winners won Cedar Point tickets for Physics Day as a prize for their victory across the pool.
Each boat had certain requirements in order to qualify for the regatta. The boats had to be made from untreated cardboard and the teams could only use clear packaging tape. The clubs and organizations that joined had no requirements.
44 out of 93 teams made it across the pool in their cardboard crafted boats. Many times had interesting and creative themes. such as St. Patrick’s Day, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” , “The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf”, and many more. Which theme did you like the most? We’ll have to wait another year for the next cardboard boat regatta which will take place again in March. If you were not able to make it or just want a copy of the Cardboard Boat Regatta, you can purchase a DVD from any of the Physics teachers for $5 while supplies last.
