On December 6, 2013, former President of South Africa and revolutionary, Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95. Mandela died at his home with his family right next to him.
For those who may not know of Nelson Mandela- he was a South African anti-apartheid icon as well as a President of South Africa for five years. Mandela did many things to stop racial segregation and was a huge influential factor for activists. Not only was he looked up to in South Africa, but all over the world. Mandela even won the Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela also spent 27 years in prison, but yet he still had faith in humanity.
President Obama said “I can not fully imagine my life without the example Nelson Mandela set.”
However, Mandela’s health wasn’t in good shape in recent years when he was admitted to the hospital for a reoccurring lung infection. Mandela was responding to treatments until Thursday- the announcement of his death.
There will be a state funeral that will be held for Mandela very soon.
